So, I took the plunge to buy an electric bicycle as a way to save money on parking and to take advantage of the good weather in Tucson. I tried riding a regular bike to work for a while as it is only two miles from my house to work, but there is a slight incline on the way to work and it is just enough to leave me sweaty by the time I reach my office. So, instead of arriving winded and drenched, I gave up on the regular bike and was driving the two miles (a habit of which I am not proud). Anyway, after receiving my Chinese model electric bike bought off of Ebay (cheaper than the others I saw), I tested it out today for the first time. So far so good--but I feel like I am cheating. So much for exercise--the pedal assist function kicks in right away so if feels like I'm coasting downhill even when I'm going up. Fortunately I can turn the lithium-ion battery off if I like and pedal as I would on a regular bike. The battery and extras make the bike a bit heavier, but not so much that I can't pedal around easily on the flat. I can totally see myself using the bike to go greater distances than with a regular bike, and to use the bike to carry things like groceries. Saving money on a reserved parking spot and on gas are also some of the potential perks. Anyway, we'll see how I make use of it....

With the latest update to the kernel 2.6.28-14, the graphic is broken, you can't log in unless in safe mode. Solution:
2.6.28-14 kills PSB driver on Dell Mini 10 & Acer One 751h

sudo apt-get install psb-kernel-source
sudo shutdown -r now

the psb kernel will be automatically recompiled.

I'm running out of money. I'm leaving in a foreign country, in Tucson, Arizona, and till now I wasn't able to find any job. I'm not really spending much, but still, you need money for survive. My latest desperate idea is to try to make money with a blog or web site. Not this one, I won't put advertisements here. I don't know until this would work, if people discover how to get rid of advertisements on the web...
How to get rid of advertisement on the web? It's really easy. First install firefox. Then install on firefox the add-ons AD Block Plus and No Script. Check how to do and tutorials on the oracle (google). I'm enjoying very much internet now, I load web pages very fast and my CPU won't be overloaded from stupid ad scripts, where also you add security on your connection.
So, I was thinking to make a website for make money. How? well, making a blog, with a lot of advertisements, that is hit many times for day. How to make it? posting something interesting, that people search a lot on the net. What people search on the net? considering that most people would use google for find something, I can use google trends. So, what's trendy these day? outside the peep video of Erin Andrews, who don't know who she is, a hot trend is Daniel Suelo. This guy, "DANIEL SUELO LIVES IN A CAVE. UNLIKE THE average American he isn't worried about the economic crisis. That's because he figured out that the best way to stay solvent is to never be solvent in the first place. Nine years ago, in the autumn of 2000, Suelo decided to stop using money. He just quit it, like a bad drug habit." (copied from the Huffington post, obviously the Huffington post reports about this hot search trend Guy). So, searching for a way to make money, I fond out someone that doesn't need any. Just to remind you how futile our problems are. And this isn't even a crazy guy. Sure doesn't look well dressed, but he really seem happy of his choice. I like this guy. Yes, he survive with the help of others, at the end. But is help that others are happy to provide him. And, at this point, if he wants to make money it wouldn't be difficult for him. I know someone that lived in a cave, but that was an experiment of isolation. Or "The Elfs", a community that live in the wild in Tuscany, Pistoia, Italy (pretty much the same, no money, only goods exchange between them). Daniel you should go there instead! Tuscany is a more trendy place than Ohio...

Yoani Sánchez has a blog, GENERACION Y, the Cuban generation born with a Russian name, Y. But what about this other side? we are the generation B, second class citizens, born with the Bush (jr & sr) and Berlusconi, the mafia man that changed forever italian culture with his junk television and politics, the two Bushes, making war for oil, subsidizing GM agriculture and backing Monsanto and Microsoft.
One recent post she had was about food, how difficolt was to find it. Well I think she should say thanks in primis to the USA, that back only "American friendly" dictatorship. I'm sure the Cuban government would like to have McDonalds and Papa' John Pizza etc. down their roads, but for now Fidel is still the enemy for Americans. What about this other side of the wall? how free we are when we go to food policy? this is a great movie, explain just all the GM world, and how they control farmers life now, and our life tomorrow...
But, I'm still waiting, when they'll do the soy ice cream that tastes like chicken?

So, under the Tucson sun, decided to go to see this movie. Interesting, shocking, the Loft cinema sold out it for three days, sign that the Americans find it a sensible topic. The movie talk about how the food industry is in the hands of few companies, that use unskilled illegal immigrants for keep the costs low, make experiments with cow for find a better way to feed them with crops instead of grass.

Over 60% of GM food is made in the US. Over 70% of US product contain GM. The European Union and the United States have strong disagreements over the EU's regulation of genetically modified food. The US claims these regulations violate free trade agreements, the EU counter-position is that free trade is not truly free without informed consent.
Remember the mad cow? infected animals transmitted the disease... because where given the brain of dead animals for food. This is Matrix. Farmers don't decide anymore how to feed and grow their animals, the corporations do.
What's GM? it's genetically modified food, that it is been untested on humans, that can create food allergy, or other unknown disease. But, worse, introduce the concept of copyright in food: farmers are not allowed to reuse their own crops, or rise the chicks as they want.
Most of the engineered food, made by Monsanto, is for make stronger crops to survive at their pesticides. What about pesticide residues in that food?
Take for example canola oil, considered so good for your health. In reality is an GM food for resist to the pesticides, and is "naturally" engineered from rapeseed in the 1970s. This crop wasn't tested on humans, and need a chemical process otherwise is still toxic for humans. how good can be?

Run the Windows defragmentation tool on C: (My Computer, Right click on drive, Properties, Tools, Defragment Now)

Download ubuntu 9.04:

Restoring your USB key to it's original state using Linux:

A. First we need to delete the old partitions that remain on the USB key.

1. Open a terminal and type sudo su
2. Type sudo fdisk -l and note your USB drive letter.
3. Type sudo fdisk /dev/sdb
4. Type d to proceed to delete a partition
5. Type 1 to select the 1st partition and press enter
6. Type d to proceed to delete another partition (fdisk should automatically select the second partition)

B. Next we need to create the new partition.

1. Type n to make a new partition
2. Type p to make this partition primary and press enter
3. Type 1 to make this the first partition and then press enter
4. Press enter to accept the default first cylinder
5. Press enter again to accept the default last cylinder
6. Type w to write the new partition information to the USB key
7. Type sudo umount /dev/sdb

C. The last step is to create the fat filesystem.

1. Type sudo mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/sdb1

Create USB startup disk: system > administration > USB Startup disk creator

Restart the computer. Press F2 to enter the bios.
Go to boot section: select Usb Storage, press F6 to move up, save & exit

If successfully booted from CD, the Ubuntu logo will be displayed on the screen. Press Enter to continue.
Follow the prompts until you are asked this question: "How do you want to partition the disk ?".
Choose manual partitioning. Resize the ntfs partition as untouched of 10240 MB.
Esc partitioning, restart the computer with windows, windows xp need auto set up: This allows the Windows system to automatically rescan the newly-resized partition (using chkdsk) and write changes to its own bootup files.

Turn off windows. Insert back the USB stick and start ubuntu, select "try ubuntu without any change"
If autologin doesn't work, do "startx" at prompt
At this point start gParted: System > Administration > Partition editor
I created a primary linux swap partition 1048 MB
And one extended unallocated partition with the rest (I can not do more than 4 primary partitions)
so a new ext4 partition, leaving 10 GB at the end
and a fat 32 partition with the rest, for windows and exchange space linux/windows

click on the media usb and start the installation
select manual partitioning, select swap, root, and /windows as montpoint
leave install for a while, reboot, connect to the internet.
do the system > software upgrade, check anyway, will say it's updated, but it isn't.

At this point, there is some problems with GMA500, you can go at a resolution 800x600, for a better resolution:

create the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-mobile.list with the following content:

Now you want probably change the timout for GRUB for boot faster:
sudo vi /boot/grub/menu.lst
Change timeout from 10 to 2

For firefox, should ask itself for plugin on web pages like flash etc. You would unselect view > toolbars > navigation toolbar
and view > status bar
you should also install ad block plus plug-in for firefox (see list of plugin on firefox)

Now you need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add the below line to your Device Section
Driver “psb”

Dario Fo and his wife, Franca Rame, performed for ages around Europe and the world, he is an Italian satirist, playwright, theater director, actor, and composer. His style is about an "Giullare di corte", an artist who was working for the entertainment of the King, but at the same time taking joke of him (and for that most of the time tortured and killed). But this style, evolved in ages, it's a form of information that is tolerated from the authority. One of his play, for example, lightly against the church, but not allowed that time, made all priest that had to check if to censure him, happy and laughing about the play, to allow it. But, at the end, The Communist, the Catholic, the Fascist dislike him.
Dario Fo withdrew all rights to perform his plays in Czechoslovakia in protest after Warsaw Pact forces crushed the Prague Spring in 1968, and refused to accept cuts demanded by Soviet censors. Productions of his plays in the Eastern Block ended.
In 1970, first play of Accidental Death of an Anarchist criticized abuse of forces of law and order, in name of the Anarchist Giuseppe Pinelli.
When Fo criticized police in one of his plays, police raids and censorship increased. A fascist group, commissioned by high ranking officials in Milan's Carabinieri, the Italian military police, kidnapped Franca Rame, torturing and raping her. Rame returned to the stage after two months with new anti-fascist monologues.
In 1980 Fo and family founded a retreat, the Libera Università di Alcatraz, in the hills near Gubbio and Perugia. They bought the valley bit by bit. The retreat is currently run by Jacopo Fo.
In 1984 finally, the greatest "Democracy" of the world, the USA, allow him to visit. That's because of his critics on Vietnam War and about JFK assassination (officially because he was Communist, but where?).
In 1997 Dario Fo won the Nobel of literature.

due anni fa, credo, vidi i massive attack ad Assago. fu uno di concerti più belli che ricordi. pensavo che non avrei visto strumenti sul palco. invece suonarono magnificamente ogni pezzo, e i vari vocalist furono una vera rivelazione. mi ricordo una ragazza, di colore, che cantò un pezzo di blue lines in modo superbo. alla fine, salutarono a pugno chiuso. una magnificenza. da quel dì, passarono da "gruppo molto bravo" a "band eccezionale da tramandare".

Tutti conoscono, magari più per sentito dire che per l'ascolto dell'album o per la visione del film, il concept dei Pink Floyd. e molti hanno una anche vaga idea di quello che è stato il tour, probabilmente perchè hanno visto il Live in Berlin di Waters all'indomani della caduta del Muro. i concerti del 1980 con la scenografia completa ebbero luogo solo in quattro città: Londra, Dortmund, Los Angeles e New York. Di questi concerti giravano già da tempo vari bootleg, più o meno di buona resa sonora, e un video, preso a Londra all'Earls Court. Nel 2000 uscì l'album ufficiale, con registrazioni live dai concerti del 1980 e del 1981. si spera nel dvd, ma ancora non se ne sa niente, si teme non ci sia del buon materiale per confezionarlo. per adesso, accontentatiamoci del sonoro..

Sonorità anni '70 per questa band inglese, ma anche qualche accenno di quel brit pop tanto in voga (Oasis su tutti) in quegli anni. Già dalla copertina si capisce che è molto curato, e le canzoni non tradiscono quest'impressione. ci sono accenni di Deep Purple, di Grateful Dead (a Jerry Garcia viene addirittura intitolata una traccia), ci sono sitar e chitarre, più melodiche che distorte, e buone intuizioni. il disco risulta molto omogeneo, magari poco vario, ma sempre gradevole. Il singolo, Tattva, arrivò al quarto posto della chart britannica. Ma la band, dopo un avvio fulminante e pur facendo intravedere grandi potenzialità, non riuscì a confermarsi, e quest'album rappresenta la vetta della loro produzione, almeno finora.

Then, suddenly, in 1935, the Bureau flooded the nation with educational propaganda against marihuana use. Through this studied deception, the Bureau effectively lobbied for the passage of the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, which considerably restricted the usage, distribution, and production of marihuana. Significantly, restrictions on marihuana automatically implied restrictions on the cultivation of hemp. Then the campaign was extended to the whole world, and today hemp is no longer cultivated. Mainly, at that time, there were an commercial reason for the US to prohibit the cultivation of hemp. But that was also the time when alcohol was prohibited. The damage that marijuana cause is less than alcohol, but the use of alcohol is now even publicized and one of the main social problem. But the use of hemp is a lot more than that; Hemp is one of the most versatile plants known to mankind. Its fibres can be used for textiles and ropes or made into paper. Its seeds are a valuable food rich in unsaturated oils, which can also be used as fuel. Hemp requires few pesticides as it quickly outgrows any weeds. It leaves the soil clean for other crops. When hemp stalks are dew-retted in the fields most nutrients are returned to the soil for the next crop.

The best thing about Spring in Missoula is the Farmer's Market. Lots of locals buying fresh, locally grown produce and bedding plants. Several of the vendors belong to the Montana Sustainable Growers' Union whose members commit to growing and selling their organic produce locally and to using sustainable growing and harvesting techniques. The more I learn about how much energy and natural resources are used simply in the transportation of food, not to mention in the manufacture of synthetic pesticides and herbicides, the better I feel about buying from local producers.

American media/politics: Good or Ugly?

I watched the primary election results come in from Pennsylvania primary today. It started me thinking about the amount of time all the mainstream media are spending on primary election coverage in the US. I find it problematic that so much media time is spent covering presidential election politics. Given the limited time and space that the media has to present any kind of information, I really wonder at the fairness of covering the election campaigns to such a degree. The American mainstream, in any regular news cycle, devotes only a small fraction of its already limited coverage to such problems as the world food crisis, global warming and environmental issues and other concerns of global proportions. This results in a representation of America as a country more concerned with the trivial aspects of its own provincial politics than of problems that affect the world.

It must be said that media coverage gets people excited, and getting excited about political campaigns, especially presidential ones, can motivate people to get more involved in the political process. This is certainly a good thing. But unless we take the step to do something after the campaigns and the coverage are over (run for office ourselves, organize community members around an issue, educate others about real problems and suggest solutions), we have let the media control how and when we take responsibility for our civic participation.

William Randolph Hearst was an American newspaper magnate. Hearst was a leading newspaper publisher. The son of self-made millionaire George Hearst, he became aware that his father had received a northern California newspaper, The San Francisco Examiner, as payment of a gambling debt. Still a student at Harvard, he asked his father to give him the newspaper to run. In 1887, he became the paper's publisher and devoted long hours and much money to making it a success. Crusading for civic improvement and exposing municipal corruption, he greatly increased the paper's circulation.

Citizen Kane, still considered the best american movie ever, was ideated, made and interpreted from an young Orson Welles, it's a fiction about Hearst, a denunce about his power, really brave that time, since Hearst controlled pratically the information, the newspapers in the USA. Was the new against the old, was the new era of cinema and television against the era of paper.
"Quarto poter", "Fourth Power", is the italian title of Citizen Kane, refering to the fact, in modern era, there isn't only three power, how was ideated from John Locke and Montesquieu in the XVIII (quite old, for be modern democracy, no?) These should be separate from and dependent upon each other so that the influence of any one power would not be able to exceed that of the other two, either singly or in combination. When the newspapers appear, at the beginning they were free, there were a pluralism of information. But then they've been concentrated and hold only from few people, and then began the Fourth Power. The battle over Citizen Kane was about a new age of information, more free, against the old. And today? still the information is controlled from few people, and the internet universe, more free, start his battle.

With this pacific manifestation, the italians will demonstrate for their freedom of information. Until now, we passively took the information from the Fourth Power, without dubt about it.
Now, on the network, people start to expose their own thought, to publish their own news. A lot of garbage, sure, but in this way, overloading the communications channels, we no longer trust the information, the Fourth Power, and we'll restart to think with our own mind, and even us will start a blog, and we'll be confident about our idea.

Guillet's most important battle happened towards the end of January 1941 at Cherù when he decided to attack enemy armoured units. At dawn he charged a column of tanks armed only with swords, guns and hand grenades. He passed unhurt through the British forces who were caught unaware. Guillet then turned to charge again. In the meantime however, the British had organised themselves and fired horizontally with their howitzers. Their shells ripped open the chests of Guillet's horses before exploding. This was the last cavalry charge the British faced and the last but one in the history of cavalry.
Colonel Harari was the commander of the British special unit services that tried to capture Guillet in Italian East Africa. A cadet of Colonel Harari, Victor Dan Segre, later became his close friend and biographer.
Following the war Guillet entered the Italian diplomatic service where he represented Italy in Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, Morocco, and finally as ambassador to India .
But Amedeo was more than that. Carismatic, fight all wars, against Brits and Nazi, a rebel, secret service, ambassador, close to Indhira Gandhi. And don't call him fascist.

Election day in Italy. Here is the probable winner. Someone can say "Italy does not deserve Berlusconi again", but at the mediocrity of this men and his Mafia party there is no opposition. All political lobbies need him for justify their own existence, their privileges. The past government was so weak (or need him so much to justify them self) that wasn't able to apply an European Union sentence for send rete 4 (One of Berlusconi's TV) on the satellite channel tv, and now we are fined 300000 euro for day from the European Union for that. Rete 4 employee 400 people. With that money we can close the tv and still pay them.

Anyway, something is moving. The population no longer follow the politicians, and new movements are on the air. An interesting one: 25 Aprile, the V2 Day.

I've been thinking a lot lately about what amounts to "urban homesteading." Apparently quite a few people are doing it: combining the activities of the farm (gardening, raising poultry, reclaiming greywater, etc.) and life in the city. I like the idea of making good use of the space, of growing my own food, of paying new attention to mundane activities. Hopefully when I move this summer I can start to create my own urban homestead, even if I'm living in an apartment.

Breaching Milltown Dam

Speaking of water, they finally breached the Milltown Dam a couple of weeks ago. It's been a long time coming. I actually read in the paper that the first fish (or at least the first fish that they've tracked), made its way upstream past the dam for the first time in 100 years. While the clean-up of the Superfund site isn't finished, it's been exciting to see the rivers run freely again.

Water, water everywhere and we are duped into buying it bottled. Even in areas where tap water is safe to drink, demand for bottled water is increasing--producing unnecessary garbage and consuming vast quantities of energy. Tap water comes to us through an energy-efficient infrastructure whereas bottled water must be transported long distance.

But most tap water is contaminated from some source:

Chlorine is a chemical added to the water. Chlorine is a highly efficient disinfectant, and it is added to public water supplies to kill disease-causing bacteria that the water or its transport pipes might contain.

Fluoride is added to the water. That's for help build strong bones and teeth. Hard to believe.

Lead and Industrial and Agricultural polluttants.

But alternatives to chlorination for water treatment do exist. Several European and Canadian cities now disinfect their water supplies with ozone instead of chlorine. That's does not mean it's better.

Let's examine the fluoride problem:

"I now hold a different view. …the fluoridation of community water supplies can no longer be held to be either safe or effective in the reduction of dental caries….Therefore, the practice should be abandoned."- Foulkes, 1992 - after he convinced Canada to add fluoride

It's so stupid! why add fluoride to tap water? It's not economically convenient, we drink maybe 0.1% of the tap water, and for that we pollute all water...

But not all country add fluoride (not everybody is inside the tunnel)

If fluoride is so great, why have the following countries either never fluoridated or else stopped when they found out how bad it was?:

Italy
Scotland

The companies that produce fluoride are paid billions to add it to the tap water...

Then, if to choose from bottled water and Coca - Cola (http://killercoke.org/) and other chemical beverage it's obviously the first, but what to choose between bottled water and tap water? There is no guarantee that bottled water is better than tap water. The best thing to do is filter the tap water. How to filter it? It comes down to this choice: reverse osmosis or carbon block. Your choice.

Presidential contenders

The two candidates left in the race to represent the US Democratic Party in the upcoming presidential election, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, both made appearances in Missoula, MT this past weekend. Montana's primary election will be held on June 3, the last one to be held before the Democratic party convention. Since the race is still close, even the few delegates Montana has to send to the Convention may be at stake. If so, it would be a rare chance for Montana to make a difference in a national political contest.

Both candidates are excellent speakers, and come across much more favorably than they do on TV. Because their messages aren't chopped up into 30 second sound bites, you actually get to hear the rationale they have behind their positions and to get a sense of how they think about problems. The way the media portrays these candidates I think is both helpful and harmful. You may get more information than you did if the media didn't exist, but at the same time the way the media construct the view of events or people often times distorts who or what they really are. In political contests, I now think that it is really important to find out in person about the candidates if only to give yourself another perspective and to get closer to the truth.

Ora, è vero che non ci sono più i gruppi di una volta. 50'anni fa era più semplice, era tutto da scoprire. adesso è già tanto se si fanno buoni album che non somigliano spudoratamente a qualcosa. come già detto, a mio parere gli ultimi sono i Radiohead. questi Kasabian, tra qualche anno, nessuno, pochissimi, sapranno chi cazzo sono. ma il disco, il loro esordio, è un gran disco. è copiato, ovviamente, di questi tempi cosa non lo è? dai Kula Shaker, dai Primal Scream, dagli Stone Roses, dai Placebo.. ma almeno la metà dei pezzi del disco sono pezzoni che farebbero la fortuna quasi di chiunque. la band è sfrontata, suona decisa e persino bene, miscelando rock ed elettronica, con un basso spesso potentissimo e un tappeto ritmico di prim'ordine. è un disco di pancia, molto compatto, omogeneo, da gustare tutto d'un fiato.

Anche se, per i loro ultimi lavori, sono un gruppo inutile per le sonorità pop che ne hanno banalizzato il suono, i Jayhawks sono stati una delle formazioni più significative della nuova frontiera alternativa del country americano dei primi anni 90, e il loro Hollywood Town Hall a tutt'oggi rappresenta un vero e proprio manifesto.
E' un album in cui domina la provincia americana, molto evocativo. L'equilibrio fra country e pop raggiunge qui un livello ottimale: i Jayhawks maturano con quest'album uno stile personale marcatissimo: gli arrangiamenti sono semplice ed essenziali ma mai banali, con un ottimo lavoro alle chitarre, e il gioco delle armonie vocali (tutti i pezzi sono cantati a due voci) è davvero superlativo.

Walking Town

You can see this kind of "art exhibition" all around the centre. It's for incentive people not to use the car. It's for incentive people to walk. It's for incentive people go shopping, I'll say. It's an attempt to convert this drinking town in a town for shopping, as remunerative as alcohol, but without it’s negative effect. But It’s not really nice go around with this whether. Yes, the chemtrail effect is useful for mitigate (or accelerate) global warming, but can’t cancel the wind! And even if this is a fabulous example of modern art, it’s not going to change the life. And this still will be an alcoholic town that became a fight club in the late night. Here another idea: instead of fight club do a fuck club, convert this “art” stylized figure of walking people in a “art” stylized figure of erotic kamasutra movements, and instead of selling alcohol in the pub sell aphrodisiac cocktails, and at the end, one fuck club is not going to hurt anyone. Because is this what the young generation here are looking for: there is no culture here, nothing is left from the past, just bad alcohol in places with bad music.
