The Story of Stuff

This is a great short that explains the true, yet hidden, costs of consumption.  If only everyone would see this movie...

The public domain is a range of abstract materials – commonly referred to as intellectual property – which are not owned or controlled by anyone. The term indicates that these materials are therefore "public property", and available for anyone to use for any purpose. The free culture movement is a social movement that promotes the freedom to distribute and modify creative works, using the Internet as well as other media. Copyleft is a play on the word copyright and describes the practice of using copyright law to remove restrictions on distributing copies and modified versions of a work for others and requiring that the same freedoms be preserved in modified versions.
"Free software is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of free as in free speech, not as in free beer" Richard Stallman
Stallman founded the Free Software Foundation in 1985 to support the movement. The philosophy of the movement is to give freedom to computer users by replacing proprietary software under restrictive licensing terms with free software, with the ultimate goal of liberating everyone in cyberspace. The two most prominent people attached to the movement, Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds, have deep philosophical differences, but has not prevented Stallman from using Torvalds's kernel or Torvalds from using Stallman's GNU General Public License.
Free/Libre Knowledge can be acquired, interpreted and applied freely, it can be re-formulated according to one's needs, and shared with others for community benefit. Open source hardware refers to computer and electronic hardware that is designed in the same fashion as free and open-source software. Open source hardware is part of the open source culture that takes the open source ideas to fields other than software.
What about pharmaceutical? "I think if you invent drugs, you should be able to charge for them," Bill Gates.

Muto

This his the opera of BLU, an artist from Bologna realized on the wall of Buenos Aires and Baden. The technique is the Stop motion: it's an animation technique which makes a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved by extremely small amounts between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames are played as a continuous sequence. But, in this case, it's drawn on the wall...

Zappa

Since the dawn of civilization, people have cultivated the plant known scientifically as cannabis and agriculturally as hemp for its fiber, seed, and pharmaceutical properties. Throughout the world, the records of archaeology and history reveal that humanity universally recognized the benefits of this unique plant. Such recognition ended abruptly in 1930, when the newly created Federal Bureau of Narcotics began to educate the American public about marihuana, as hemp had been known colloquially in the Sonoran region of Mexico. Between 1930 and 1934, the Bureau compiled a body of misinformation which suggested that the use of marihuana was directly linked to crime, induced violent behavior, and caused insanity. Then, suddenly, in 1935, the Bureau flooded the nation with educational propaganda against marihuana use. During this act of demonization, the Bureau continuously cited its own accumulated body of misinformation as a precedent for legislation on the federal level. Through this studied deception, the Bureau effectively lobbied for the passage of the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, which considerably restricted the usage, distribution, and production of marihuana. Significantly, restrictions on marihuana automatically implied restrictions on the cultivation of hemp. Then the campaign was extended to the whole world, and today hemp is no longer cultivated. Mainly, at that time, there were an commercial reason for the US to prohibit the cultivation of hemp. But that was also the time when alcohol was prohibited. The damage that marijuana cause is less than alcohol, but the use of alcohol is now even publicized and one of the main social problem. But the use of hemp is a lot more than that; Hemp is one of the most versatile plants known to mankind. Its fibres can be used for textiles and ropes or made into paper. Its seeds are a valuable food rich in unsaturated oils, which can also be used as fuel. Hemp requires few pesticides as it quickly outgrows any weeds. It leaves the soil clean for other crops. When hemp stalks are dew-retted in the fields most nutrients are returned to the soil for the next crop.

Spring is here!

The best thing about Spring in Missoula is the Farmer's Market.  Lots of locals buying fresh, locally grown produce and bedding plants.  Several of the vendors belong to the Montana Sustainable Growers' Union whose members commit to growing and selling their organic produce locally and to using sustainable growing and harvesting techniques.   The more I learn about how much energy and natural resources are used simply in the transportation of food, not to mention in the manufacture of synthetic pesticides and herbicides, the better I feel about buying from local producers.

Arizona flora

The Sonoran desert in Southern Arizona has many different kinds of flora, to my pleasant surprise. From a distance the land looks dry and somewhat barren, but up close cacti and other plants create a unique type of "forest." Here are some photos taken at the Sonoran Desert Museum outside of Tucson.

TIME 101 dogs

I was on the airplane when my neighbor turned the TIME 100 edition 2008, and was reading this article: George W. Bush By Silvio Berlusconi. Surprise! What, Berlusconi is able to write an article on one newspaper? Mah probably he paid someone for write the article for him. Anyway, the Time chooses really well the 100 leaders! Berlusconi, today internationally isolated, choose his own model: George Bush, the loser of the American politics, when even the Republican Party take the distance from. He chooses the leader more similar to him, with a little inferiority complex in front of the American superpower. Like Mussolini was looking the Germany of Hitler, with the little difference that they weren't stupid at all, and they were similar because Hitler copied everything from Fascism
(Heil, Hitler - Have Cesare -, Third Reich - Terza Roma); Bush probably don't need to copy Berlusconi electoral advertisement...

Today Bush no longer will win an election, and, how Berlusconi can win again? Check his opponents!

Roy Buchanan
